BSRG Post Grad Training
Workshop
Brief Review: The DTI core store in Edinburgh was the
setting for the first of the BSRG workshops for 2003. This facility holds all
the released core for the UK sector of the North Sea, and is free to academic
workers. They also have well logs on microfiche, with the latest releases
viewable on PC.
We looked at 3 cores, covering a range of clastic sedimentary
environments:
Boson Sandstone, a deep marine turbidite / debris flow sequence
Rotleigend - fluvial and aeolian Brent - classic marine to delta top
and back again. Gary Hampson
(Imperial College) introduced the students to the general advantages (and
otherwise) of core, and demonstrated how to tie the core into the well logs.
The geological settings of the wells were explained, and then logging
techniques demonstrated. Then it was practise-time for core logging.
Fortunately, making a summary log of a few hundred feet of core, or making a
detailed log of 10 feet, isn't a mind-numbing exercise comparable to weeks
spent seriously logging for research purposes! And, with people to talk to, we
were unable to recreate that feeling of "I havn't spoken to anyone for days"
usually associated with epic stints in the core shed.
Despite record frosts in Edinburgh,
the inspection room was a pleasant working temperature. Most
untypical?
We've yet to recieve any formal
feedback from the students, but my overall inpression was that everybody
learned something, and some learned lots! The atmosphere was good (another
first for a logging session?), doubtless helped by the 4 pub sessions we
squeezed into the 2 days. And the curry.
Gary Hampson () is now in charge of organising further training / workshop sessions,
so if you've ideas contact him.
Cheers
