Lessons in
Tectonics, Climate and Eustacy from the Stratigraphic Record in Arc
Collision Zones
Date: 11th - 14th October, 2005.
Venue: Price, Utah, USA.
Organisations: A GSA Penrose Meeting and IODP Planning
Workshop.
Overview: The sediments deposited at active plate
boundaries record tectonic, oceanographic and climatic processes in these
dynamic tectonic settings. As such sediments and sedimentary rocks are key to
understanding and quantifying the evolution of these processes during arc
collisions. In this meeting we solicit presentations that describe the
processes that form the stratigraphic record in arc collisional settings and
use that record to document the rates at which crust is either accreted to or
eroded from plate margins. In doing so we aim to synthesize recent advances in
our understanding of these environments and stimulate further research in both
active modern settings and in their ancient analogues. We shall also discuss
the areas for future research efforts and produce a white paper report
presenting these conclusions for application to Integrated Ocean Drilling
Program. Limited funds are available to support student
participation.
