Paleosols session
at the 2005 AAPG / SEPM Annual Meeting
Date: 19th - 22nd June, 2005.
Overview: In 2005, the AAPG and SEPM will be holding
their annual Joint Convention with the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geology
(CSPG) in beautiful Calgary, Alberta, Canada. At this meeting (June 19-22nd),
we are looking forward to chairing a session highlighting paleosols in clastic
and carbonate sequences titled Discover your roots: paleosols and their
applications. It has been awhile since weve discussed research on
paleosols, and this will be an ideal opportunity to exchange ideas across both
clastics and carbonates. We invite you to submit an oral and/or poster session
to showcase or summarize some of the work that you have undertaken recently on
paleosols. (Feel free to pass this invitation on to any interested colleagues).
Themes which will be addressed include recognition and
identification of paleosols, paleoclimate and paleo-landform reconstructions,
the importance of paleosols as stratigraphic markers, the utility of paleosols
in sequence stratigraphy, the diagenetic overprint imparted by paleosols and
the importance and significance of paleosols in reservoir characterisation and
performance. Given the strong petroleum industry participation at this
convention, this is a good chance to educate and catch the interest of the
industry by making our talks relevant to exploration and development where
possible.
We are delighted that Paul McCarthy of the University of Alaska
has agreed to be our Keynote Speaker for paleosols in clastics. We are hoping
that Paul Wright of the University of Cardiff will also be our keynote Speaker
for paleosols in carbonates.
We encourage you to attend this meeting and to give serious
consideration to submitting a paper to our Paleosols Session. To learn more
about the meeting and procedures for submission of abstracts, please visit
Information for Presenters on the AAPG web site (http://www.aapg.org/calgary/technical/index.cfm).
Please note that the absolute abstract submission deadline is
November 12th, 2004.
If you have further questions about this session, please do not
hesitate to contact one of the co-chairs:
