BSRG Annual General Meeting - Leeds 2003

Overview:
The conference will run from Saturday the 20th of December (fieldtrips, workshop and ice breaker in the evening) through Sunday (sessions plus conference meal) and ending on Monday the 22nd of December at 3 pm to enable people to get home.

Here we highlight a number of key events…. Full details of the conference can be found at: http://earth.leeds.ac.uk/bsrg2003

Talks and Keynotes:
Talks will follow the standard BSRG 12 minutes + 3 questions. A number of 30 minute Keynotes are planned, with speakers so far including Quentin Fisher, Doug Masson, Rob Riding, and Gary Willgoose.

Themes:
A number of themes are planned this year, these include:

Microbial sedimentation
Density currents
Seismic sedimentology
Oceanography and sedimentation
Climate and landscape response
Coastal processes

A special session will also be held on: Chemistry of biogenic carbonate (convenors J. Andrews and J. McArthur).

HOWEVER, abstracts for any topic relating to sedimentology are welcome, we wish to reflect the science that is out there!

Dedicated Poster Session:
This year there will be a dedicated poster session on the Sunday afternoon, with the posters displayed in the same central location as the rest of the conference. Posters will also be able to be kept up through out. The dedicated session is designed to make sure that posters have a high impact and that everyone gets sufficient time to see all the posters.

Meal:
Conference meal with a difference! The meal will be held at the National Mining Museum and will include a short trip down a mine for all those interested (!) as well as plenty of food and drink. So a great opportunity to see how life has changed for geologists in the last couple of centuries! We'll provide details at a later stage on appropriate dress but safe to say it's a very clean mine these days and there's plenty of room to change for anyone who does not want to risk that new outfit.

Workshop:
Measurement and monitoring of morphologies and flows: techniques and progress. This day long technical session aims to outline and examine recent developments and improvements in the technology and equipment used for measuring and monitoring form and process in sedimentological environments. The background and theory for each technique will be discussed, followed with working examples to highlight the potential of each. The day will also include laboratory demonstrations of several pieces of equipment in action. This will include presentations from several leading instrument manufacturers.

Fieldtrips:
Fieldtrips return after a number of years, and we will be running three one day trips on Saturday the 20th. These were a traditional highlight of BSRG and are strongly recommended particularly for postgrads… where else do you get a whole day fieldtrip for a tenner?! On offer are two trips to the Namurian deltaics of Yorkshire, one looking at environments and large-scale soft sediment deformation, and the other at the Classic localities of the Rough Rock. A further trip will look at the Sedimentology of glacial and fluvial deposits in the Dales. All of the trips will include a stop for suitable lunchtime refreshment!

Deadlines:
Registration, abstract and accommodation forms will be on the website this Monday. The deadline is the 16th of OCTOBER.

Can you advertise the meeting to all your friends and colleagues.

Looking forward to seeing you all here.
